Angie’s Story Into Yoga
How did you get started in yoga and breathwork?
My parents taught me yoga when I was little. Later on in life, in my early 20's, I stumbled upon yoga in my local gym and began a regular love-hate relationship with my asana (poses) practice. After about 5 years I had a breakthrough moment, something shifted and it felt quite magical, and it’s been 10 years since I had those feelings of hate towards yoga and I honestly am so glad I pushed through!
Explain your story
After a period of low self worth, feeling lost and confused as to which direction my life was going, struggling with body dysmorphia, substance abuse, SO much people pleasing and disordered eating, yoga finally found me. I was raised with yogic rituals growing up in an Indian household so had always practiced in some way, but in the darker moments the lightness of yoga carried me through and I became obsessed with wanting to learn more. This is what rather rapidly led to my teacher training in India over 5 years ago so I could deepen my knowledge, funnily enough without the intention of teaching. Fast forward to today I've worked with brands from Instagram, M&S, Dishoom, Dentsu and UberEats, to break down false and harmful narratives in the wellness industry with a mission to reshape it. My vision is for more diversity, inclusion and accessibility and South Asian representation within yoga and beyond.
I've since founded UNEARTHED, my wellbeing community membership platform connecting members with ancient, sacred rituals to apply in your modern day and the home to our retreats. I'm so incredibly grateful for an amazingly warm and open global audience, but I know there is still so much work to be done.
Where did you do your 200 hour teacher training?
I did my training in Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga in Rishikesh, India. I spent a month in India and fully submerged myself into my culture and beautiful heritage.
What’s your advice for new yoga practitioners?
Be consistent! 5-10 minutes is better than nothing at all. You have to start somewhere so be patient and trust the journey.
How do you find your flow state?
A walk in the park with a podcast. I find being in nature inspires me. Yoga movement and breath awareness will always be a winner for me in allowing for a release and creating openness to quite literally flow into wherever the universe is taking me...
What is your daily dose of wellness?
Lighting incense, yoga, morning coffee and a 30-45 minute walk in nature.
